Driver dies after rear-ending 18-wheeler

GROSSE TETE, LA (WAFB) -

Louisiana State Police said a man died when he rear-ended an 18-wheeler on I-10 Wednesday evening.

It happened on I-10 East near LA 77 in the Grosse Tete area around 6 p.m. The victim was identified as Michael McCants, 34, of Baton Rouge.

Troopers said the van McCants was driving ran into the back of a tractor-trailer that was slowing down because he was approaching traffic congestion. They said McCants was driving fast, but did not classify it as speeding.

Investigators said the impact from the crash sent the van off the road and into the median, where it stopped. According to LSP, McCants was not wearing a seatbelt and died at the scene. The driver of the big rig was not injured.

Troopers reported they don't suspect driver impairment was a factor in the crash, but per procedure in deadly crashes, a blood sample was taken from McCants and sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

The crash remains under investigation.
