Methanex to move second plant to Ascension Parish

ASCENSION PARISH, LA (WAFB) -

Another big announcement for Ascension Parish. Methanex corporation plans to relocate its methane plant from its site in Chile to Geismar.

This is the second plant the company is moving to the area. The plants will bring approximately 2,500 construction jobs and 165 permanent positions over the next three years. State and parish leaders are thrilled the Canada-based company is expanding to South Louisiana.

"We want some people to move in here and come and get some jobs and of course continue with our education system," said Gonzales mayor, Barney Arceneaux. "It means a lot to us here in Gonzales and Ascension Parish."

"That speaks volumes about the teamwork going on, but also I think it puts Ascension Parish on the map internationally that we're open for business," said Chris Loar, Ascension Parish Council chairman. "Well think it's going to absolutely benefit the parish, not only from the number of jobs, the increase in sales taxes...all of that positive economic outlook...but not just for Ascension Parish, but for the entire capital area region I think it's really going to leave a huge footprint."

The first plant should be up and running by the end of next year.  The plant being moved from Chile should open in 2016. The company is hiring for positions at both.
