Eufaula mom arrested for allegedly beating children with a piece of wood

EUFAULA, AL (WTVM) -

A Eufaula woman has been arrested for the alleged beating of two of her children.

Bethany Paige Sumner, 29, is charged with two counts of torture and willful abuse of a child under the age of 18 by a responsible person. Her bond has been set at $20,000.

Sheriff LeRoy Upshaw with the Barbour County Sheriff's Office stated that an 8-year-old child went to school in Eufaula with bruising, whelps and cut places on his skin. The school contacted the Department of Human Resources who then contacted the Barbour County Sheriff's Office.

DHR did a safety plan on the child and discovered that another son in the home, age 11, had the same type of injuries to his body. 

Lt. David Morris, who investigated the case, stated investigation revealed the children had been beaten with a piece of wood for allegedly breaking a light bulb in the home on the evening of April 1, 2013 by the mother and a another person, who allegedly held the children down for the mother.

The second person is being sought in connection to the case at this time. The children have been removed from the home and placed in foster care.
