PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) -

A Fort Benning soldier's family continued to search for answers days after he was found lifeless in a ditch.

Since the gruesome discovery, his wife and her boyfriend were arrested in connection with the murder.

News Leader 9 spoke exclusively with the victim's family in Birmingham and Sylacauga.

Sergeant First Class Donald Lashon Wilson finally got the promotion he'd been waiting for, two days after he was found shot to death.

His mother, Betty Wilson said her world was torn apart the moment two soldiers arrived at her door step. "Automatically I knew something had happened to my son. I just told them my son is gone. And I just lost it. I completely lost it," Betty Wilson said.

Sfc. Wilson was a platoon leader and decorated veteran. He was deployed to Iraq twice. His awards and medals include six Army Commendation medals, a Meritorious Service Medal, three Good Conduct medals, two Iraq Campaign Medals, Expeditionary and Service medals, Korean Defense Service Medal and a Combat Infantry Badge.

Wilson was found shot multiple times early Monday morning in Fort Mitchell. His wife of nearly two years, Gloria Wilson, was arrested early Tuesday morning.

Couple married June 6, 2011 after dating since 2007.

The story become more complex: the man Gloria Wilson, 34, was accused of having an affair with, Travis Leonard, 27, turned himself in for questioning shortly after she was arrested.

While SSG Wilson was deployed, his wife moved Leonard into their home.

"She played this off as if [Leonard] was her God brother. My brother would've never stood for anything like that. This was her God brother someone that supposedly had fallen on hard times, was alone in the state and they could help him out," Kendra Wilson-Hudson said.

Thursday evening, Leonard was arrested for murder. His bond was set at $500,000. Gloria received the same bond amount.

The victim's mother Betty Wilson said her son was at war in his own home.

"I knew [Gloria Wilson] was not good for him. I knew there were things going on. I've always known. From the first day I met her, I got bad vibes from her," Betty Wilson said.

One of the victim's sisters said upon finding out about her brother's death a conversation they had the day before his death suddenly made sense.

"I tried to give him encouragement about his marriage. He told me [Gloria] asked for a divorce. He loved his wife. He devoted all his time to her and tried to make everything better," Kendra Wilson-Hudson said.

Just hours after her husband was found dead, Gloria Wilson posted a picture that said, "Be as Happy as Possible" and about two week ago, she posted a picture of a black handgun.

SSG Wilson's funeral is scheduled for Wednesday 11 a.m. May 8, 2013 at Pine Grove Baptist Church. He will be buried in his hometown of Sylacauga at the Evergreen Cemetery.

He leaves behind two children.
