BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

The Center Point Fire Marshal says that a fire that left eight children and two adults without a home is being investigated as suspicious.

Matt Angelo cannot confirm that the fire is arson, but there is evidence the fire may have been set intentionally. An investigator at the scene said earlier Friday that a lot of pieces in the investigation are not adding up at this point.

Officials are searching for a person they think may have more information in the case. They say that this person is not a suspect.

The fire happened around 5:42 a.m. on Friday morning at 111 Valley Terrace off Potts Hollow Road. Children ages 12, 9, 8, 6, 4, 3, 2, and 1-years-old were in the apartment along with a man and woman.

The female resident of the apartment says she heard a popping noise and woke up. She says she noticed the power was out and got the kids out.

Center Point Fire Battalion Chief Gene Coleman says there were no injuries and they are not sure what caused the fire. Investigators believe the fire started in a utility room in the back of the apartment.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, Center Point Fire Department and Red Cross all responded to the fire.
