MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

The cry of disbelief from 25-year-old ShaBrittany Williams pictured left over the sudden, tragic death of her 19-year-old roommate and friend Jessica Stokes pictured right.

"I'm just in a daze, like I can't believe that I got hit by a car and let alone that I came out and she didn't," Williams said.

Both Auburn University Montgomery students hit by a car around 1:00 Friday morning while they were walking to an end of the year house party near Atlanta Highway. Stokes died instantly. Williams now wears a head bandage. She says she has a big gash at the top of her head. Williams is now back in her hometown of Lynette, Alabama.

"We didn't hear no car screech. We didn't hear anything. All I know is I heard people screaming and hollering and when I opened one of my eyes, they said you've just been hit by a car. And I immediately say blood run down me cause couldn't move. They thought I was paralyzed. All I heard them say was we got to get her out of this ditch. She's in a ditch and I was bleeding a lot from my head," Williams said.

With a large turnout to the party, Williams says they parked in Logan Family Dentistry parking lot right next the Goodwin Animal Clinic and headed toward the house. She says before they could even make it to the highway, a car rammed them in this grass area.

"They say he left and then came back to scene," Williams said.

Montgomery Police Sgt. Denise Barnes says every driver is required to take a breathalyzer test in traffic fatalities. The male driver was not arrested.

Chelsea Barclay was one of four other people walking with the roommates.

"I don't understand that though. The whole alcohol situation doesn't matter to me. But you kill my friend, but yet you still walk free," Barclay said.

The surviving victim and witnesses' parents say they will be traveling back to Montgomery Monday to meet with detectives. They have a lot of unanswered questions and want to know why the driver is not behind bars.

The students tell us they were not drinking and were using caution while walking.

AUM officials say the counseling center is available to students who need it.
