GISA track teams battle wet condition at State Meet

They say to be a champion, you must battle some type of adversity.

That was never more true than at the final day of the GISA State Track Championships at Hugh Mills Stadium Saturday.

As teams battled each other, they also battled the rains that battered the track all day long.

In the end, southwest Georgia teams were able to compete and contend, but none walked away with a state championship.

The Westwood boys' and girls' teams each finished fourth in the Wildcats' first campaign in Class AA.

Gatewood's girls took home the AA title, while Trinity Christian of Dublin won for the boys.

Widlcat head coach Earl Ford says he's happy his kids competed and hopes they learn from the competition this weekend.

"We ran up against some stiff competition. And we got our nose bloodied a little bit," he says. "But we were able to compete through it, and we'll be better for it."

The Deerfield-Windsor Lady Knights were unable to reign supreme again.

Coming off the 2012 title, the Lady Knights finished 4th in AAA. Bulloch Academy is the AAA Girls' State Champion.

The Deerfield boys' team set out at the beginning of the year to win the state title, but came up just short Saturday, finishing 2nd to Stratford Academy.

DWS boys' track coach Craig Rhodes says silver isn't a bad way for his seniors to go out, but they will be missed.

"We're going to lose a great group of seniors. Not just as competitors, but guys that give us leadership every day. That's the biggest thing. We're going to miss their leadership on the track, around the school," says Rhodes. "But we have a great nucleus of juniors coming back. Hopefully we'll get some younger guys out and we'll come back next year and compete again."
