TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Recently Arizona Wildcats basketball coach Sean Miller loaded up with what will be another top recruiting class.

But Miller didn't stop with players. He kept recruiting this week to fill the open spot on his coaching bench.

And you can welcome back Damon Stoudamire.

Memphis Tigers head coach and Arizona alum Josh Pastner confirmed Sunday night that Stoudamire is leaving UM to join Miller at UA.

Pastner said Miller requested permission to speak with Damon.

"I knew he would be interested," said Pastner.

Stoudamire fills the vacancy left by the departure of James Whitford, who took the head coaching position at Ball State.

Stoudamire is one of the players who helped bring the phrase, "Point Guard U" to Tucson. He was a first-team All-American for legendary coach Lute Olsen, teaming with Khalid Reeves his junior year to lead the Wildcats to the Final Four.

He was named Pac-12 Co-Player of the Year in 1995 (Ed O'Bannon) when he averaged 23 points a game.

The 7th overall pick by the Toronto Raptors, Stoudamire was never an NBA All-Star but he did win the 1996 NBA Rookie of the Year award. He played eight of his 15 seasons for the Portland Trailblazers, finished his career with a career 13 points and six assists per game average.

Stoudamire had just completed his second season as a part of the coaching staff in Memphis.
