PINAL COUNTY, AZ (CBS5) -

Judge Boyd T. Johnson is retiring after nearly two decades on the Pinal County Superior Court bench.

Johnson announced on Monday that he will be retiring as of June 30.

Johnson was born and raised in the greater Phoenix area and was in private practice law from 1976 to 1984. During that time he also served as the Coolidge City Prosecutor for four years.

In July 1984, Judge Johnson became a senior trial attorney in the Pinal County Attorney's Office and was appointed in 1986 as the Chief Deputy County Attorney for Pinal County. He served in that office for more than eight years, until November 1992, when he was appointed by the Board of Supervisors to serve as the Pinal County Public Defender. 

He was appointed by the Chief Justice of the Arizona Supreme Court in January 1995 to serve as the first full-time Judge Pro Tempore of the Superior Court in Pinal County. He was appointed to Superior Court Judge to fill a vacancy left by Judge Robert R. Bean. He was elected for his first full four-year term in November 1996 and has been re-elected every four years since then, according to Pinal County Communication.

In 2001, he was appointed as the Associate Presiding Judge and subsequently appointed by the Chief Justice of the Arizona Supreme Court for a three year term, 2006 to 2009, as the Presiding Judge for Pinal County. He currently serves as the Presiding Judge for the Civil and Criminal Bench.
