More details: Ft. Mitchell mother, daycare worker admits to child abuse

FORT MITCHELL, AL (WTVM) -

A Phenix City mother probably never thought her 2-month-old baby was in danger when she allowed 31-year-old Sherae Reich to babysit.

Reich told authorities she lost her composure when she shook and slammed the baby down.

The abuse occurred at Reich's home-based daycare on Sorghum Court in Fort Mitchell.

Reich called the baby's mother who works as an emergency medical technician.  The mother was on-duty at the time, and she responded to the scene in an ambulance unsure why her baby was not responsive.

The baby was rushed to an Atlanta hospital with bleeding on the brain and behind her eyes.

"She picked the baby up and was shaking the baby trying to get it to stop crying," said Russell County Sheriff Heath Taylor. "She then put the baby very forcefully down in the swing or seat that the baby had I believe some of that trauma came from hitting that seat as well."

Sheriff Taylor says Reich also admitted to shaking the baby on a previous occasion.

Sheriff Taylor said Reich's husband, a Fort Benning soldier, denies knowing anything about the abuse.

The baby was admitted to the hospital for a few days.  Fortunately she did survive the attack- she was released from the hospital and is now at home recovering.

Sheriff Taylor says at least 7 children were in Reich's care at the time of the assault.

He says every child Reich has cared for inside her home – including her own children – will be examined for injuries.

Reich was not home when we visited her house on Monday, and her neighbors declined to comment.
