The Boston Marathon bombings may have been hundreds of miles away from our area, but the impact is being felt here and across the country.
In the days following the attack, reports of suspicious packages caused fear and evacuations at the Columbus Government Center and Lowe's Home Improvement store.
They turned out to be false alarms but the bombings made people more alert and more on the look-out for trouble.
Even now, security for major events in the valley is getting a closer look.
The University of Georgia recently announced that backpacks will not be allowed at its graduation ceremony – it's all in an effort to prevent what happened in Boston from happening here.
Our local Homeland Security chief advises everyone to be more vigilant, to keep our eyes and ears open at all times.
We're not suggesting that what happened in Boston could have been prevented, but we do know with the increase in these types of attacks on Americans and decrease in federal dollars for things like Homeland Security - we all have to do more.
