Montgomery woman's home built by women making a difference

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

In the New Hope Village in north Montgomery, Denesha McIntyre is about to receive what she considers 'Heaven on Earth.'

"Thank y'all so much!' McIntyre tells painters.

It's a new, three bedroom home built not all by men, but with more than a few women, too. It's part of Habitat of Humanity's 'National Women Build Week.'

"In Montgomery we are having women working on this house as a preview to a full women-built habitat home in the fall," said Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Elizabeth Saliba.

The majority of the women on site say they've never built a home before, which is why the Montgomery Habitat chapter had its construction director on-hand to make sure everything was up to code during the construction phase of the home.

Ronda Smoke volunteered her time as a painter and couldn't think of a better way to spend the day.

"It just feels good to give back to the community," said Smoke.

We found a number of female volunteers either sweeping or painting the home inside and out.

McIntyre already feels as though the volunteers have made a tremendous difference for her. She hopes to move in by June.

"It's just a blessing. It really is," said the mother of two.

Habitat leaders say McIntyre qualified for the home. She will have a monthly mortgage of around $300, with no interest.

For the better part of 5 months the female volunteers helped build a new Habitat home for a stranger, opening the door for Denesha McIntyre to enjoy her American dream.
