Cougars fight off elimination, defeat Armstrong

Posted: Updated:

GREENWOOD, S.C. – Junior Jimmy Obermark finished a single shy of the cycle while sophomore pitcher Jordan Villhauer threw his first career complete game as the second-seeded Columbus State University baseball team fought off elimination in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament defeating 10th-ranked and third-seeded Armstrong Atlantic State University 7-1 on Thursday morning. The tournament is being held at Dolny Stadium in Greenwood, South Carolina.

Villhauer improved to 6-1 on the year allowing just a single run in the top of the fourth. He allowed six hits while striking out seven batters.

Obermark had the game of his young CSU career on Thursday going 3-for-4 with a double, triple and a two-run homerun. He drove in two runs while scoring three times. So far in two PBC Tournament games, the junior is 5-for-8 with four extra-base hits for the Cougars.

After stranding two runners in the first, Columbus State (28-21) struck for two runs in both the second and third innings. In the bottom of the second, Martin Castro blooped a one-out single in shallow leftfield before Obermark followed with a long double to leftfield. In an early critical situation, freshman Blake Edwards delivered for the Cougars lining a double just past the third base bag scoring both runners.

In the third, back-to-back two-out doubles pushed the score to 4-0. With Jackson Oliver on first with two outs, CSU executed a perfect hit-and-run play as Dustin Averett laced a double down the leftfield line that scored the speedy Oliver. Castro followed with a double off of new Pirate pitcher Juan Vera.

Armstrong (31-15) scored its lone run in the fourth thanks to a two-out rally of its own. R. J. Dennard worked a four-pitch walk and consecutive singles by Clayton Miller and Chris Zittrouer plated a run for the Pirates.

The Cougars put another two spot on the board in the sixth as Obermark took a 0-1 pitch over the leftfield wall for his team leading ninth homerun of the season.

CSU scored its final run with two-outs in the eighth after Obermark started the rally with a triple. Very similar to the second inning, Edwards snuck a double past the third base bag down the leftfield line to bring in the run.

The Pirates tried to put together a rally in the top of the ninth but Villhauer induced a groundball to strand the bases loaded.

Armstrong was just 2-for-9 with runners in scoring position in the game leaving nine runners on base. CSU also turned three double plays.

In addition to Obermark's great offensive day, Blake Edwards also had a three-hit performance going 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs. Brett Teschner (2-for-4), Dustin Averett (2-for-4) and Martin Castro (2-for-3) all contributed in the win.

For Armstrong, Dalton Johnson was the lone player to pick up two hits going 2-for-4.

Dylan Morrow was hit with the loss lasting just 2.2 innings in the starting effort allowing four runs.

Columbus State will once again return to action at 10:00 a.m. in another elimination game on Friday morning. The Cougars will play Francis Marion.
