Business Break - Valley Rescue Mission

Founded in 1974, Camp JOY, nestled in the beautiful foothills of the Appalachian Mountains near Hamilton, Georgia, offers a one-week camping experience for boys & girls between the ages of 7-11. Camp JOY operates 6 weeks during the summer months and can accommodate up to 75 children per week. There is no fee for the children to attend camp; instead, their camping experience is underwritten by generous donors at the rate of $50 per child per week.

For most of the kids, the week at Camp JOY is definitely the highlight of their summer, as they come off the city streets and into nature at its finest. They enjoy camping, hiking, fishing, swimming, crafts, recreational time, singing, Bible studies and guest speakers. Three nutritious meals are served to the children each day, including snacks. A camp administrator oversees the program, and is assisted by counselors and staff members from the Mission.

Serving as a camp counselor is a spiritually stretching experience for teens and college students! Applications are accepted each spring from potential counselors who want to play a huge role in a child's spiritual, social, and emotional development. Volunteers are also needed at Camp JOY to help with the recreation, crafts, Bible studies, and to provide love and attention to the children.

Camp JOY is equipped with recently renovated cabins, chapel, arts-and-crafts room, campfire area, basketball court, in-ground swimming pool, and game room. Three hiking trails surround our 4-acre lake. Individuals, churches, and groups may rent the camp facilities when Camp JOY is not in session. Contact Jodie Jones at 706-322-8267, ext. 203, for more details.
