MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

The building from which the telegram that marked the start of the war between the states will soon have a new life. The Winter Building's facade has graced downtown Montgomery for more than 170 years. Soon it will start a new life as The Hotel Dexter.

Built in 1840, the Winter Building stands on the corner of South Court Street and Dexter Avenue - right in the heart of downtown Montgomery.

MGM Development Group LLC has signed a contract for the purchase of the Winter Building and intends to transform it into a 32 room upscale boutique hotel known as "The Hotel Dexter."

The group says the renovation will include the restoration of the original hardwood floors, windows and fireplaces. The high ceilings and exposed brick will remain in many areas of the building.

Plans for the structure include adding a full service restaurant and bar, a cigar room, a library/casual room as well as an exercise facility. The group also plans on the hotel housing a 24 hour valet service, two meeting rooms and a banquet room to accommodate 70 people.

On April 11, 1861 the order for troops to fire on Fort Sumter marking the beginning the Civil War was sent by telegram from a second story office inside the Winter Building which, at the time, was a branch of the Bank of Saint Mary's. It's listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The anticipated opening for the hotel is in early 2014.
