OPELIKA, AL (WTVM) - The Auburn-Opelika area has turned the heads of the prestigious business magazine, Forbes.
The cities were ranked number ten on this year's list of America's best small cities for jobs.
"Any time that you get a positive rating and it continues to increase by a household name like Forbes, certainly it's a great thing not only for Auburn, but the entire area," says Auburn Mayor Bill Ham.
According to the Forbes website, 398 current metropolitan statistical areas were ranked based on employment data.
Rankings are based on recent growth trends, mid-term growth, long-term growth and the region's momentum.
"I think publicity, positive news, such as this, is a good thing for a community because it draws attention to the community and hopefully it will create what we call 'top of mind awareness," explains Opelika Mayor Gary Fuller.
In 2012, Auburn-Opelika ranked at number 63 on the same list.
City leaders attribute this year's jump to the hard work of their teams and the synergy between the two towns.
"There are so many things that we work on together along with Lee County and the County Commission and of course apart of that collaboration day in and day out is Auburn University. So with everyone pulling together, we wouldn't have the success that we do," says Ham.
Both Fuller and Ham say that the cities will continue to work hard to gain ground on the number one spot that this year was held by Mildand, Texas.
