BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

A fight between two female students turned even uglier when a parent allegedly fired a gun at a Birmingham middle school.

The incident happened on the front lawn of Ossie Ware Mitchell Middle School on Monday afternoon after school. Apparently several children witnessed the fight and shots fired.

In cell phone video obtained by FOX6 News you see parents and students yelling and fighting at the entrance of Ossie Ware Mitchell Middle School. But that's not the worst of it. A woman wearing a red t-shirt, reportedly the mother of a student at Ossie Ware Mitchell, is seen pointing the gun at a group of people and then fires it into the ground.

"I was just shocked. I couldn't believe a grown up would do that around all those kids," Herman Simpson said.

Herman and Leslie Simpson say their 12-year-old daughter first had problems with a classmate on May 2 when a girl beat her up pretty badly.

"Her hair was everywhere. Her eye was red and purple and swollen," Mrs. Simpson said. "She had scratches all over her neck. Her shirt was ripped."

The parents filed a police report and sent their daughter back to school, saying they were told the girl who attacked her would be sent to alternative school.

But the Simpsons say that didn't happen; instead, yesterday they claim the same girl attacked Jasmine again as well as their older daughter.

Herman Simpson says he drove up on the altercation and when he was trying to drive away from the scene, the mother of the classmate who attacked his daughters blocked him off.

"She was coming in the opposite direction and she actually cut me off and pulled in the lot and they got out of the car and altercation started from there," he said.

He says the woman and her daughter got out of the car and started yelling and that's when his daughters jumped out and fight eventually began.

"Her daughter had my daughter on the ground and I was trying to break the fight up and next thing I know, the gun went off," Herman Simpson said.

"The gun was pointed at the ground when she fired it. But bystanders told me she pointed the gun at me before she fired it into the ground," he added.

"If the situation would have been handled properly from the beginning, none of this would have ever happened," Leslie Simpson said. "I don't feel safe to let my kids come back here ever again."

Michaelle Chapman, spokesperson for Birmingham City Schools, issued this statement about the incident:

"We are looking into the incident and will work with the Birmingham Police Department in our continuing efforts to ensure the safety of our students on our campuses. The students involved will be dealt with in accordance with the Code of Student Conduct."

Leslie Simpson and another parent tell FOX6 News they heard the principal of the middle school on the intercom system Tuesday morning asking students to turn over any video of the fight so it could be deleted. We called the principal around lunchtime Tuesday for comment. We did not hear back from her.

FOX6 News also attempted to contact the woman in the red shirt. No one was home when we stopped by her house.

Sgt. Williams with Birmingham Police confirms they are investigating this shooting. At this time no arrests have been made.
