Lady Devils earn trip to state soccer finals

PERRY, Ga. (WTVM) - Nikiay Comer scored in the 24th minute and goalkeeper Anna Scogin made that one goal stand as the No. 3 Columbus Lady Blue Devils beat the 8th-ranked Veterans Lady Warhawks in the GHSA Class AAAA state soccer semifinals on Tuesday night. The game was played at Herb St. Johns Stadium in Perry.

Abby Roth of the Lady Devils (16-5) chipped the ball downfield to set up the only goal. It turned into a one-on-one battle between Comer and Lady Warhawks keeper Erin Harbison. Harbison came out the net in an effort to keep Comer from being able to take the shot, but Comer managed to boot the ball into the net before tripping over Harbison and doing a forward flip.

Veterans (15-4-1) had one serious scoring chance in the 40th minute, but Scogin was able to make a point-blank stop on Myranda Wyatt of the Lady Warhawks with just 9.8 seconds remaining in the half.

Columbus will face No. 1 Marist (21-0-1) in the championship game on Friday night. The game will likely be played at either Kennesaw State or West Georgia.

It will be the Lady Devils' second straight trip to the state finals. They lost to Allatoona 2-1 in last year's title game.
