ASCENSION PARISH, LA (WAFB) -

A widespread power outage affected a large portion of Ascension Parish and part of East Baton Rouge Parish Monday.

The first outages were reported just after 5pm.   At 5:30pm, nearly 21,000 homes and businesses serviced by Entergy were without power.  As of 7pm, the number had grown to 24,832.  As of 11 pm, about 1,300 customers were without electricity.

"We had an equipment failure at our Willow Glenn switchyard," said Entergy spokeswoman Sheila Pounders.   "We are currently working to pick up the load while we make the necessary repairs.  We are expecting everyone will be restored by 10pm."

The affected area stretches from the southern part of the Shenandoah through the Gonzales area, Entergy said.   The switchyard is located off Highway 30.
