BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

It was a busy morning for lawmakers at the Louisiana Capitol as they consider several timely and sensitive issues.

A House bill is being considered in a Senate judiciary committee that would address the liability status of volunteer firefighters in Louisiana. Current law removes liability from them when responding to fire calls.

HB 469 filed by Rep. Bryan Adams, R-Gretna, would change the language of the law to include all responses, not just fires. State Fire Marshal Butch Browning said several lawsuits prompted the bill. It passed through committee.

A House resolution being introduced at the Capitol calls for a freeze of Medicaid funds to Louisiana Planned Parenthood sites. That is, until several fraud cases in the state are settled. SB 35 by Sen. David Heitmeier, D-New Orleans, is causing some tense moments in the House Health and Welfare Committee.

A similar concurrent resolution calls for a freeze of funds and passed through the Senate floor Monday. It will now head to the House. Those opposed to the resolution, like Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast, call these resolutions politically motivated attacks.
