TUCSON, AZ (CBS5) -

A 28-year-old Tucson man has been arrested in a string of jewelry burglaries at homes where he was hired to clean, according to authorities.

The Pinal County Sheriff's Office said Robert Gilson was an employee of Maid2Clean and contracted by homeowners.

PCSO said while he was at the homes, he would steal jewelry and then sell it at Tucson pawn shops.

Between mid-February and April, Gibson made 46 jewelry sales to Catalina Pawn Shop in Tucson, investigators said.

PCSO detectives tied Gibson to four different burglaries. In all, nearly $47,000 in jewelry was stolen.

The pawn shops said Gibson claimed he had inherited the jewelry from a wealthy family member who recently passed away.

Gibson admitted to detectives that he stole 76 pieces of jewelry from eight homes, claiming he had done it out of financial desperation.

Gibson's live-in girlfriend, who also works at Maid2Clean, said he bought miscellaneous items and marijuana with the money.

Gibson was arrested on seven counts of theft, seven counts of trafficking stolen property, one count of marijuana possession and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia.
