GLENDALE, AZ (CBS5) -

CBS 5 News has learned that Acting Glendale City Manager Dick Bowers has appointed Debora Black to the position of Chief of Police.

Black has been interim chief since March of 2012, when former Chief Steve Conrad left the department to become the top cop in Louisville, KY, where he grew up. Black spent more than 20 years with the Phoenix Police Department before joining Glendale in 2006.

CBS 5 News inquired about the search for a new chief earlier this month and a city spokeswoman said, "The city of Glendale has an interim police chief and has not moved forward at this time to undertake the search for a permanent candidate."

On Tuesday, Glendale police officials released the following statement from Black:

"The Glendale Police Department has a long, rich history of providing excellent public safety service to our community and I am proud and honored to serve as the leader for this department. I look forward to working with the dedicated men and women of this organization to provide the highest level of service to our citizens and visitors, making Glendale a safe city.

"My mission is to build on the exceptional foundation already in place by Glendale police to continue meeting the city's current and future needs."

CBS 5 News is working to find out more details about Tuesday's appointment of Black.
