LAPLACE, LA (WAFB) -

One of the suspects in the deadly ambush that took the lives of two deputies of the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff's Office pleaded guilty Tuesday to amended charges.

The Times Picayune reported Derrick Smith pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact to attempted first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was originally charged with principal to attempted first-degree murder of a police officer.

His older brother, Brian Smith, is a suspected gunman in the case. His father, Terry Smith, also faces accessory charges.

Derrick Smith is the third suspect to enter a guilty plea in the case.

The trial is set to begin mid-2014.
