FLAGSTAFF, AZ (CBS5/AP) -

A Williams man is in custody in connection with the fatal shooting of an Ashfork teenager, northern Arizona authorities said.

John A. Willis, 53, was taken into custody Tuesday, said Coconino County sheriff's spokesman Lt. Tim Cornelius.

He's being held on suspicion of premeditated first-degree murder, possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, and unlawfully having a firearm.

Authorities said the body of 17-year-old Manuel "Boongy" Navallez was found last Friday south of Interstate 40 and it appears he died from a single gunshot wound to the back of the head.

Interviews and evidence collected during the service of search warrants on multiple homes indicate it wasn't a random shooting incident, Cornelius said.

Cornelius also said that three residences and one vehicle were searched and Willis was known to frequently stay at one of the homes.

Sheriff's authorities are investigating the possibility that the shooting involved drugs or was retaliation for a home burglary allegedly involving Navellez.

Cooperation of the members of the communities of Ashfork and nearby Kaibab Estates was a key part in quickly developing leads in the case, Cornelius said.
