FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) -

It was a time for celebration at Ft. Benning as 59 WHINSEC (Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation) students received their diplomas.

Students from nearly a dozen countries graduated from the command and several general staff officer courses.

Ten received the Master of Military Arts and Science Degree, and six have earned Master's Degrees through Troy University.

Wednesday's commencement speaker was Maj. Gen. Jose Mayorga – the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Homeland Security and America's Security Affairs.

"Well it's an honor, for one, for me to be back here. I have ties to this institution and it's an opportunity for me to mold some of the young and aspiring graduates," Mayorga explained.

He wanted his audience to remember that what he believes are the traits of senior leaders including having good character, ethics and consensus building. This graduation culminates a year of study designed to educate officers to be prepared in any situation as field-grade commanders and staff officers.
