ALEXANDER CITY, AL (WTVM) - Hundreds of people in Alex City will soon be without a job.
Employees of the Russell Athletic Fruit of the Loom mill were told Wednesday morning that the facility will soon close with the first round of employment separations starting around July 29. About 200 people are being laid off.
Alex City has lost about 7,000 jobs in the last 15 years.
Mayor Charles Shaw says the layoffs hurt, and city is looking for ways to bring other industries to town.
The Fruit of the Loom distribution plant, which employs 400 people, will remain open for the foreseeable future.
