New bill proposes changing Memorial Day date

Memorial Day date change

(WTVM) - Memorial Day's annual three-day weekend could be in jeopardy.

U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa introduced a bill Thursday which would change Memorial Day from the last Monday of the month to May 30. Hanabusa thinks that many Americans have begun to celebrate the long weekend as the beginning of summer rather than honoring those who died in battle.

The holiday was originally celebrated on May 30 until Congress changed the date in 1968.
