MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A 3-year-old fights to survive at Le Bonheur Children's hospital after being severely beaten by her mother's boyfriend. She remains in critical condition Friday.

According to police, Tony McKinney baby-sat his live-in girlfriend's daughter Wednesday. During that time, the child was brutally beaten while her mother was at work.

McKinney, 26, told investigators he "spanked her good".

The child was unresponsive when McKinney placed her in his Ford Mustang and drove her to the mother.

From there, McKinney dropped off the mother and daughter at Delta Medical Center.

The child was quickly transferred to Le Bonheur with a subdural hematoma, liver laceration, kidney laceration, a bladder rupture, and her brain had shifted 8 millimeters.

Domestic abuse by a non-biological adult it is an all too common scenario.

Nancy Williams with the Memphis Child Advocacy center said regardless of age, not every adult is equipped with childcare skills.

"I wish that people who took care of children, parents and others, had the courage to say, "I need help,' and do things that make sure a child is safe," said Williams. "Obviously, when a child is beaten that's not spanking, that's not discipline."

In the past 18 months, the Child Advocacy Center has raised a flag for seven children whose deaths resulted in criminal charges. In every case, the perpetrator was either a mother, father, stepfather or a parent's partner.

"We see some patterns, and that is male, and that is 18-25 and they are caretakers," said Williams.

Williams believes adults who tend to be abusive toward each other are more likely to transfer that abuse onto an innocent child in the relationship.

Police arrested McKinney at home at the Hamlet Apartments Wednesday night.

McKinney charged with aggravated child abuse of a child under six. McKinney sits in jail on a quarter of a million dollar bond.
