Local Boy Scout groups split over new policy

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

The Boy Scouts of America voted to allow young gay scouts to be members in their organization...but didn't provide the same option to its adult troop leader.

The controversial vote came after a longstanding argument to allow gay members to participate.

More than 70 percent of Boy Scout units are sponsored by religious groups and the new decision has many of them split on the topic of sex.

According to a statement made by the Boy Scouts of America, the policy change will go into effect January 1 of next year.
