Opelika family business owner retires, store closes after 44 years

OPELIKA, AL (WTVM) -

Sam Pridgen, Owner of Home Fashion Paint & Floor Covering Company, is retiring.

Home Fashion Paint and Floor Covering Company has been in the same location in Opelika for 44-and-a-half years. The store will be closing its doors in June.

"I retired in 2007 and after being retired for a year I'd come back into the store and my son Scott was having trouble finding employees he could depend on," Pridgen says. "So I told him that I would stay for four or five weeks to find him help and then I'd leave, but now that four or five weeks has turned into 5 years."

When asked how he was able to run such a successful business competing against national chains in town, Pridgen says it was customer service.

"If you give customer service they will come see you, they will come back, they'll tell your friends, that's what happened," Pridgen says.

Pridgen looks forward to his next chapter and plans to focus on giving back to the community he grew up in. He will be teaching Sunday school at First Baptist in Opelika, and continuing missionary work as part of Way 2 Serve Ministries where twice a year, hundreds of men and woman go out in the area and repair homes for those in need.

"We will put on a roof, put floor coverings in, we do whatever the people need," says Pridgen. "What really makes it worthwhile is when you go up to a little old lady, and she hugs your neck, and she has tears in her eyes, and it makes it all worthwhile and that's what I want to do, I'm really looking forward to that."

If he had to do it all over again, Pridgen says he would not change a thing.

"If I had another life to live on earth, I'd want to come back and have the same customers and the same friends," he says.
