Tips for kids’ healthy summer snacks

(WTVM) -

As kids in our area enjoy their summer break, many parents are left with the challenge of keeping them on track with healthy routines - especially when it comes to snacking.

Now is the perfect time to help you with some healthy snack options.

We welcomed Taryn Sutterfield, a registered dietitian with the John B. Amos Cancer Center, to our studios on Wednesday to talk about healthy summer snacking.

Here are some of her tips for making sure your child snacks smart this summer:

~Plan ahead - make your top 10 list for throw-in-your-bag non-perishable snacks.

~Travel with water - water should make up the largest percentage of what we drink every day.

~Make eating fun! Create creatures out of fruits and veggies; make fun smoothies with mild tasting greens like Swiss chard and baby spinach or baby kale. Dark berries hide the green color!
