Auburn appoints Paul Register new Chief of Police

Auburn city officials have officially named Assistant Chief Paul Register to become new Chief of Police next month.

This is following Chief Tommy Dawson's retirement announcement on May 28.

Register has been with the force since 1988, serving in nearly every position as he worked his way up the ranks.

"I'm very excited and mostly I am just thankful for the opportunity" says Register. "Chief Dawson and I have worked together a long time and I don't really expect any changes. Our philosophies and goals are the same, so I don't think the Auburn citizens will see much of a difference."

Register has served as Assistant Chief since 2010. He has been Acting Chief of Police since Dawson began medical leave in March.

Register says his appointment is bittersweet, and he is thankful for the knowledge he has gained from working with Dawson.

"He gave me a lot of responsibilities that, I think, have hopefully prepared me for this position," says Register.

Auburn City Manager Charles Duggan says, "Register was the only applicant, but the first thing I told him today when were offering the job after we had an interview was that he wasn't getting it by default.  If we didn't have extreme confidence in him we'd be looking elsewhere, and he appreciated the confidence we placed in him."

Over the past 25 years, Register has served in many positions including patrol, detective, and narcotics. He says, "I think, over the years, the things I've dealt with, and the things that I've been through, will hopefully prepare me for what comes up. I have a good support network, and I have a great group here."

Auburn city officials could not be happier with their decision. Duggan says, "When it comes to experience and knowledge, that's there, and then working closely with him you find out what a quality individual he is, and also his manner with people."

Currently, there is no time table for filling the Assistant Chief position. The city says they will turn to the department for recommendations and hopefully have a finalized plan in the next two or three weeks.

Register's new title will become effective July 1.
