PHOENIX (CBS5) -

The Arizona Diamondbacks drafted Cory Hahn in the 34th round of the MLB Draft.

It's fitting since Hahn wore No. 34 for the Arizona State Sun Devils.  In 2011, three games into his college career, Hahn slid head-first into second base and was paralyzed from the chest down.

Hahn's life changed in the blink of an eye. The All American at Mater Dei High School and southern California's "Mr. Baseball" now faces the challenge of trying to walk again. He has a simple message for anyone who will listen.

"You can't just sit around," Hahn said in a telephone interview. "You have to get up and do something with your life."

CBS 5 sports reporter Mark McClune caught up with Hahn on Sunday. Hahn was in Jacksonville, FL, accepting the National College Courage Award. The emotions of Saturday were still fresh.

"There's no words to put into the emotions I've gone through, me and my family, the last few days," said Hahn. "It's an awesome thing the D'backs did for me. It was something they didn't have to do, but they decided to do anyway."

Hahn said he got the phone call five minutes before getting on the plane to Jacksonville. Hahn plans to be in Phoenix in the next couple weeks to meet with the D'backs in person.

Hahn said he'd like to work in the front office one day. For now, he is spending the summer at home in southern California doing rehab.

"It's going really well," Hahn said. "The process is really slow but the fact that I'm making progress keeps me going."
