The Department of Energy has some helpful tips to keep costs and temperatures lower this summer season.

1. Set your thermostat as high as comfortably possible, keeping in mind that the smaller the difference between the temperature inside and outside, the less it will cost to cool your home

2. Make sure there are no lamps, televisions, or computers that give off heat nearby

3. If you have a central air conditioning system, get it started regularly to keep it working efficiently

4. If you have a window air conditioning unit, make sure it's clean and not clogged with dust

5. Skip the oven and use the microwave to grill or cook

6. Don't run the dishwasher or washing machine unless it's a full load

7. Take showers instead of baths

8. Turn computers off when they're not in use
