SCOTTSDALE, AZ (CBS5) -

It was June 26, 1990 when the Valley hit the hottest temperature on record - 122 degrees.

To commemorate that day, the first annual Scottsdale Beat The Heat race will take the Saturday prior, on June 22.

Organizers calls it "the hottest race on earth." The race will start at 2:47 p.m., the precise time we hit the 122-degree all-time record high. The intention is to create something bold that will encourage Arizona tourism, even in the summer.

"We want to combine athletic achievement, with something notably historic, with a family activity, and try and create that new signature event in the summer that we're desperately lacking right now," said race co-organizer Jason Rose.

Runners or walkers can choose to do the full 11.22-kilometer race, or a shorter 5K course. It will start at WestWorld and wind through terrain featuring various views of the Valley. Organizers stress safety is their main concern.

"Those who make the choice to participate in the race will have a lot of safety precautions. It starts with Professional Medical Transport, the ambulance company for Scottsdale. We're having hydration stations every half-mile instead of every two miles. We have rest areas, we have the Scottsdale Fire Department hosing people off before the finish line," Rose said.

Dr. Jesse Shriki, with Scottsdale Healthcare, has concerns about holding a race in this kind of heat.

"The difficulty, of course, with a hot day and a race is, that as much as we're happy to see patients, I get a little nervous that we might see a few extra that day," Shriki said.

Rose recommends that participants visit with their doctor before registering.

So far, about 800 people have signed up for the race. Organizers are hoping for at least 1,000. Interest and turnout this year will determine if they do it again next year.
