Woman arrested, accused of leaving dogs in desert

PHOENIX (AP) -

A Mesa-area woman has been arrested on animal cruelty charges accusing her of abandoning two dogs in the desert.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office says deputies arrested 36-year-old Jamie Rae Sheehan Wednesday night. She was located by tracing a microchip in one of the dogs.

According to the Sheriff's Office, Sheehan admitted leaving the dogs with a small amount of food in the desert in late March, reportedly saying she was moving out of state and couldn't take them with her.

A horseback rider found the dogs earlier this month and provided them with food and water. They're now in the care of county jail inmates.

It could not be immediately determined whether Sheehan has an attorney.
