FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) -

The 197th Infantry Brigade welcomed LTC Joseph Pierce as their new Commander at Fort Benning today.

The ceremony took place at Doughboy Stadium.

Pierce is taking over command of the unit from COL Michael Rauhut who has been reassigned to Afghanistan.

COL Pierce is a native of New Hampshire and has served around the world in both command and staff positions.

"It's an exciting day for me personally, but more importantly, it's an exciting day for the 197th Infantry Brigade," says LTC Joseph Pierce. "We're continuing to train soldiers, continuing to support the mission, continuing to deploy soldiers to Afghanistan and other places around the world. So it's an exciting time for us, and we're looking forward to the challenges ahead."

COL Pierce has been serving as the Deputy Commander of the 197th Infantry Brigade since 2012, and has been on multiple deployments in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kosovo, and Haiti.
