MLB suspends D-backs' Kennedy 10 games, Gibson 1 game

NEW YORK (CBS5/AP) -

Major League Baseball suspended Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Ian Kennedy for 10 games and D-backs Manager Kirk Gibson one game for their roles in a brawl with the Dodgers in Los Angeles on Tuesday.

Kennedy hit LA rookie Yasiel Puig in the fifth inning of the Dodgers' eventual 5-3 win. The pitch glanced off Puig's shoulder and hit him in the nose.

Dodgers' pitcher Zach Greinke hit Arizona's Miguel Montero in retaliation the next inning and Kennedy then plunked Greinke in the seventh inning to spark the bench-clearing brawl.

Diamondbacks infielder Eric Hinske was suspended five games and Dodgers Manager Don Mattingly one game.

Gibson was suspended for "the intentional actions of Ian Kennedy after a warning had been issued," according to a tweet from @MLB on Friday.

In all, eight members of the Diamondbacks and Los Angeles Dodgers organizations were suspended by Major League Baseball Senior Vice President Joe Garagiola Jr.

He cited Kennedy for intentionally throwing a pitch at the head of Greinke after a warning had been issued, and Hinske for leaving the dugout and "aggressive actions." Mattingly was penalized for his conduct.

Dodgers pitcher J.P. Howell and infielder-outfielder Skip Schumaker were suspended two games apiece for "aggressive actions" and Los Angeles hitting coach Mark McGwire two games for his conduct.

Los Angeles pitcher Ronald Belisario was suspended one game for "aggressive actions."

Major League Baseball also fined Greinke, Puig, Montero and Arizona outfielder Gerardo Parra and four others.
