PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A federal judge requested lawyers for both sides come up with a solution on how the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office will be run.

Judge Murray Snow on Friday said he would like to see a person put into place as a "monitor" to make sure the sheriff's office doesn't continue the practice of racially profiling.

Snow made his comments during a hearing in Maricopa County Superior Court to consider potential corrective measures for the MCSO in the wake of his recent ruling that found Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio and his deputies were guilty of racially profiling Latinos and Hispanics.

The monitor should not be an employee of the sheriff's office, but an employee of the county, Snow said.

In addition to that he would like to see all deputies undergo training to spot examples of racial profiling and he wants them to identify when that might be happening.

Even though the sheriff's office will still be allowed to inform ICE if they have located someone who is in the country illegally, they will no longer be able to hold them until ICE arrives.

The judge is asking lawyers for both sides to meet and put into writing their collaborative solutions. He said he would like the written submission given to him no later than Aug. 16 so he can review them before an Aug. 30 proceeding in the case.

County Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox said she liked what the judge said. Wilcox feels financial reasons should not be blamed for these ideas to be put into place.

"The cost may be tremendous for Maricopa County, but this is the burden we have to bear."

The Rev. Al Sharpton, who is in town for a convention, attended Friday's hearings. He said he was pleased by what the judge had to say and the work of those who fought for this decision.

"We think this is a job well done but we're gonna wait until it is all over before we pop the champagne bottles."

Arpaio was not present during Friday's hearing.
