Col. Michail Huerter new Garrison Commander of Fort Benning

FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) -

Col. Michail S. Huerter assumed command of U.S. Army Garrison Fort Benning from Col. Jeffrey Fletcher today, June 14, at a Change of Command ceremony on York Field.

"It's truly awesome to be back, and the reception that all of you have given me is unbelievable," said Huerter in his address to the crowd. "I look forward to working with you and your elected officials in making not only Fort Benning the best installation in the Army, but also the surrounding communities."

Col. Huerter says he's honored to assume command on the Army's 238th birthday.

Huerter, a native of Topeka, Kan., is a graduate of the United States Military Academy.  He is also a graduate of the United States Army War College, where he earned a master's degree in Strategic Studies in 2012. 

An Infantry officer, his military education includes the Infantry Officer Basic and Advance Courses, Airborne School, Ranger School and the Command and General Staff College.

He is a veteran of seven combat tours, six in Iraq and one in Afghanistan.

His most recent assignment was as the Director of Operations for the NATO Special Operations Component Command-Afghanistan.

Huerter's awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal with four oak leaf clusters, Defense Meritorious Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, Meritorious Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster, Army Achievement Medal with four oak leaf clusters, Combat Infantryman Badge, Expert Infantryman Bade, Master Parachutist Wings, Military Free Fall Badge, Pathfinder Badge and Ranger tab.

Fletcher is deploying to Afghanistan.

U.S. Army Garrison Fort Benning is part of Installation Management Command's southeast region.  The garrison provides base operations, public works and family support programs for Soldiers and their Families.  These services include morale, welfare and recreation, education services, food and laundry services, religious support, fire and emergency services and residential housing.  The garrison oversees the execution of DoD Base Realignment and Closure processes, including the execution of the 2005 decision to move the Armor School here from Fort Knox, Ky.
