TEMPE, AZ (CBS5/AP) -

A man accused of killing his live-in girlfriend and then dumping her naked body on a Tempe street has been formally charged in the case.

A criminal complaint Thursday accuses 27-year-old Douglas Ray George of second-degree murder and abandonment or concealment of a dead body.

His next scheduled court appearance is July 2.

Annovedwin Begay's nude body was found placed in the street in a neighborhood near Baseline Road and McClintock Drive before dawn on June 15.

Sgt. Mike Pooley said a person driving to work about 4:30 a.m. saw the body and called police.

Police told CBS 5 News investigators they believe the body, which had significant trauma, was dumped overnight.

"Any time our officers are dispatched and they find something this horrific, you know it's something that's going to stick with them forever," Pooley said.

Authorities were using a sketch to try and get the public's help in finding her killer.

Two weeks before Begay's murder, George was hired to work the day shift as a cook at Bogey's Bar.

Ozo Cabrera worked alongside him. Other than asking for money, George normally didn't say very much while he was on the clock, Cabrera said. But when his shift was over, it was a different story.

"He would always come in at night on something, either on some type of pill or drunk," Cabrera said.

George worked only 30 hours at the bar before he was let go for repeatedly calling in sick.

"He never once mentioned his girlfriend to us," Cabrera said. "He was always quiet, he kept to his own, but it was always just something different about him this guy just didn't seem right."

Cabrera said he often saw Begay at the bar, too.

"She would just sit out there and wait for him. She would act like she was going to order something but never would," Cabrera said.

According to police reports, George and Begay had been dating for about a year. On June 4, things got physical.

A clerk at Tempe Circle K called police to report the couple fighting in the parking lot. Begay told officers George slammed her head into a car door but refused to press charges. Eleven days later, she was found dead.

"All I can say right now is that she was killed with blunt force trauma. She did have a lot of stab wounds and cuts to her face and body," Pooley said.

Tempe police said a tip from a friend who recognized a sketch of her led police to George.
