LEE COUNTY, AL (WTVM) -

After serving the Lee County Judicial System for nearly two decades, Circuit Clerk Corinne Hurst is retiring six years before her term ends.

For 18 and half years, Circuit Court Clerk Corinne Hurst has been elected by the people to manage their court system. The tremendous responsibility includes acting as custodian for all court records, managing millions of dollars, handling juries and serving as a top election official.

Now, after nearly two decades of service, Hurst is retiring.

"I have some health issues starting July of last year and a couple of surgeries and a lot of complications, I just haven't been able to get well, I need to focus on Corinne and put my health first," Hurst said.

Despite serious health issues, Hurst never lost her smile for the public she served.

"I hope the public felt like we ran an efficient office and that we were courteous and that we did all that we could do to help them," Hurst said.

A nominating committee made up of local judges will select a new clerk from a field of 11 candidates sometime this week.

Hurst will help ensure a smooth transition, and then leave to focus on her recovery and family, especially her 5 and 3-year-old grandsons.

Her last day on the job is July 1, and she will be greatly missed.

"It has been a bittersweet decision, tough decision that I had a hard time making, but I know it is the right thing to do," Hurst said. "I will miss the people here, the staff, the local bar and all of you reporters who were here all the time digging up the juiciest details on the latest case....it has been a labor of love."

As soon as the judges decide, we will introduce you to the person who will serve out the rest of Hurst's' six-year term.
