MCSB school board meeting announces new budget, 9 job cuts

A new budget for the upcoming school year has been approved by the Muscogee County School Board.

Under the new budget the district is expected to operate off of a $250 million next year. The calendar year will include no furlough days.

The hot topic at last night's meeting also included teaching job cuts.

At first we heard that 40 teaching positions would be cut from the school district, but then that number dwindled down to 20. Finally, Human Resources Director Kathy Tessin told board members that the new projected number of teacher cuts is nine.

"We are seeing a much larger number of retirements or resignations coming at this time. Normally we don't like to see attrition but we are very thankful that some individuals have other options that allow us to try and manage this process and bring the numbers down to where they need to be," said Tessin.

Tessin says that elementary teachers should be in the clear and they are looking to cut those nine positions from grades 6-12 teachers.

There are still two weeks before the fiscal year begins. Tessin hopes that they will be able to cut that number down even further.
