FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) -

Nearly 100 Soldiers assigned to the 14th Combat Support Hospital (CSH) are scheduled to return to Fort Benning after a nine-month deployment to Afghanistan Wednesday evening, June 19. They will be received in Freedom Hall.

The 14th CSH provides health care and emergency services to service members of all branches of the military assigned within the unit's operational area.  When deployed, the unit is made up of both Soldiers assigned to the unit based here, and other medical personnel from throughout the Army.

During their deployment, the unit, commanded by Col. William S. Drennon, served as a multifunctional medical task force with 600 Soldiers making up teams on 57 forward operating bases across Afghanistan.  These teams conducted more than 3,000 missions outside the forward operating bases in support of U.S. and coalition forces.

Soldiers assigned to the 14th CSH made up three surgical teams in surgical hospitals with Spanish and British partners. They worked in blood support, dentistry, X-ray, pharmacy, laboratory, preventive medicine, veterinary and combat stress detachments.  The Soldiers performed more than 1,500 surgeries, executed more than 1,500 medical evacuation missions, completed 52,000 laboratory tests, filled 12,000 prescriptions and took more than 21,000 X-rays.

Soldiers from the 14th also provided care for 1,150 military working dogs, to include surgical care for dogs injured in battle, and conducted more than 30 host nation partnerships on veterinary support and training on rabies, sanitation, livestock, working dog vaccinations and kennel inspections.

This is the unit's 3rd deployment to Southwest Asia.  In 2005, the 14th also deployed to New Orleans for six weeks to provide support after Hurricane Katrina.

Drennon is scheduled to relinquish command of the 14th on Aug. 14.
