COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Meet the newest family member of Emeritus at Heritage Hills in Columbus. Tasha, a 7-year-old Beagle mix, was adopted by the Alzheimer's facility Heritage Hills just over two weeks ago.

"Since she has been here it has been really wonderful," said Cyndi Adams, executive director at Heritage Hills. "The interaction, she's calm, she's loving and she doesn't mind if they pull on her tail every now and then."

As the resident dog of about 50 people living there, Tasha has a big extended family and they can't wait to pet her. She even has her own bed when she chooses to use it and of course, she runs free around the property.

She also loves all the attention. Tasha is no stranger to the camera; she made her TV debut in our studio on May 16 as our pet of the week with Columbus Mayor Teresa Tomlinson.

"I talked to some of the folks and they said they'll never let her go, so she's found a real home," said Mayor Tomlinson. "She's just happy as can be and they love her and that's really what it's all about."

The decision to get Tasha stems from the understanding of the powerful benefits animals have on those with Alzheimer's.

"It gives them someone to care for. It gives them a reason to get up and get moving," Cyndi said. "They will go down the hall with the dog. They like giving treats and things like that. That sense of purpose is the biggest thing."

It's also a really big thing for PAWS Humane, which works hard to find the right home for all its animals.

"We were walking past her room and one of the girls said what about Tasha for Heritage Hills we both went this is perfect," said Missy McClure, marketing director for PAWS Humane. "That's exactly what we need"

You don't have to wait for our pet of the week segment to adopt a dog or cat.

Just call PAWS Humane at (706) 565-0035 or stop by its facility at 4900 Milgen Road in Columbus.
