ELBA, AL (WSFA) -

The superintendent of Elba City Schools tendered his resignation Tuesday in advance of a new job with the Auburn City Schools system.

Superintendent Rick Rainer will become the new principal at Auburn High School.

Rainer had been head of the Elba system for just over a year, being hired for the position on June 1, 2012. Prior to that job he'd worked within the system as both a teacher and a coach.

Rainer was principal at Enterprise High School when the building was heavily damaged after being hit by an EF-4 tornado on March 1, 2007. Eight students died in the destruction.

Rainer said he made the decision to switch jobs because his mother-in-law is ill and the family needed to move closer to care for her in Lee County.
