Replica of Wright Brother's Flyer now on display at Montgomery's Overlook Park

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

A replica of the original Wright Brothers Flyer is now soaring over the capital city.

Crews installed a full-scale replica at Overlook Park Thursday. The piece weighs in at more than 6,500 lbs and had to be lifted into place with a crane.

The angle of the plane makes it appear as though it's about to take off. I will be visible from Interstate 65.

Back in 1910, the Wright brothers developed the nation's first civilian flight school in Montgomery.

Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange said their decision to set up the school in Montgomery is an important part of the city's history.

"We are the home of the beginning of civil aviation," Mayor Strange said. "The first night flight, the first flight in the State of Alabama, first flying school in 1910, so we need to celebrate, and reclaim that history so that people can see..." he added.

Overlook Park will be officially renamed Wright Brothers Park at an official dedication ceremony on July 2nd.

A relative of the Wright Brothers will be on hand for the ceremony.
