Nearly 50 years after Congress decided to stop racial discrimination at the ballot box, the Supreme Court says the law needs updating.

In a 5 to 4 ruling on Tuesday, June 25, the Supreme Court Justices struck down a key provision of the Voting Right Act of 1965.

The law requires states like Alabama and Georgia to get federal approval before making any changes to voting districts.

The decision left that in place, but Congress now has to update the formula by which parts of the country seek this prior approval.

Shelby County v. Holder is the Federal suit case that has resulted in this decision.
