Muscogee County parents who are not happy with the public school their children are assigned to can now pursue another option.

House Bill (HB) 251 is a Georgia law that allows parents to choose a school in their district, other than the one their child is assigned to, from a list of schools with available space.

Students are then selected using a lottery, and if they do get into the school of their choice, there is no provided transportation or appeal process for the 251 decision.

A list of the identified schools with space available can be accessed at

Parents may only request one school in the process.

The House Bill (HB) 251 application request period opens July 1, 2013, and the deadline for parents to submit a request form is July 17, 2013 at 5 p.m. The HB 251 request form is available at any school in the district, or the Central Registration Office located at 2960 Macon Road.

Families who are new to the school district after the July 17th deadline will have an opportunity to apply for a HB 251 transfer at the time of enrollment.

Muscogee County Schools are open Monday through Thursday and closed on Friday throughout the months of June and July. The Central Registration office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Parents are reminded not to wait to register their child for school, and to have all documentation and records required for registration at the time of enrollment.
