Exclusive interview with mother of 3 year old Marion County crash victim

(WTVM) -

The scars and bruises on 3-year-old Derrick Byse's face show he endured an accident he will never forget.

Derrick's grandmother, a retired second grade teacher, had promised to pick him up last Friday. She kept good on her promise, but before they could leave Buena Vista for Ideal, Georgia, things went all too wrong.

For reasons unknown, 59-year-old Rosa Byse was seen running a stop sign at Highway 41 north and Roseville Road, just outside of town around 8:30 p.m., according to Geraldine Blackshear.

"I thought she was heading to the hospital for a medical emergency," Blackshear said. "I had to pull to the side of the road to collect my thoughts because she almost broadsided me."

Minutes later, the Hyundai Sonata slammed into Marion Middle School and burst into flames, but not before both victims were pulled from the car.

Catherine Cottle, Derrick's mom, told News Leader 9's Roslyn Giles they're hurt to have lost such a wonderful family member. Cottle added her boyfriend, Derrick's father, lost a very loving mother.

"If she told him something, she did. She was so kind and we loved her," stated Cottle.

Cottle says her son doesn't talk much about what happened but says she's waiting on him to bring it up.

"He told me she was driving fast and he said he went up in the air and when came down and hit his head," Cottle said.

The car landed upside down before coming to its final resting place. It's still unclear what caused the accident, but one thing's for sure:

God showed us a miracle," Cottle explained. "For my son to be walking around like nothing happened, it's a miracle. He wants me to tell the world about my testimony to help save souls."

Cottle said they are still waiting on autopsy results to determine what caused Byse to speed.

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the accident.
